Kyoto is the second largest city in Japan. It is home to 1.5 million people and is located southwest of Tokyo. It is also the historical center of the country and has been its capital for 1000 years! The famous Shinto shrine Fushimi Inari is located in Kyoto. It is famous for its over 30,000 Tory gates.

Another popular city in Japan is Nara. Nara is the first permanent capital of the country. The city is famous for its ancient temples dating back to the 8th century. An interesting fact about Nara is that 1,200 friendly deer live in the city park.

One of the best times to visit Japan is during cherry blossom season in the spring. The country is laced with thousands of cherry trees that bloom for 2 weeks in April and the create stunning scenery that you have probably seen in many travel guides.

Japan is home to the Akita Inu dog breed and the leopard cat. One of the most amusing inhabitants, however, are the macaques. These cute monkeys love hot springs and often go to the spa to relax and get warm in winter.
